RENABUMA: Reviving Natural Building Traditions Through Digital Innovation

For generations, communities built their homes from what nature provided clay, bamboo, wood, and fiber. These materials carried not only strength, but also culture, wisdom, and sustainability. Over time, however, many of these time-tested practices were overshadowed by industrial building methods that are costly to maintain and often harmful to the environment.

Today, we have an opportunity to bring that wisdom back this time powered by digital innovation.

TCC-CIMET, in partnership with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, is proud to lead the Reinterpreting Natural Building Materials (RENABUMA) Project. This forward-thinking initiative is designing and prototyping affordable, low-carbon, and high-quality housing systems tailored to Ghana’s rapidly growing urban context. By combining renewable local materials with advanced digital construction technologies, RENABUMA seeks to create solutions that are both future-ready and deeply grounded in local identity.

The project places a strong emphasis on bio-based materials and digital fabrication, contributing to global progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 13.

Imagine buildings that blend the artistry of tradition with the precision and efficiency of modern tools structures that are adaptable, scalable, sustainable, and uniquely Ghanaian. That is the vision at the heart of RENABUMA.

To bring this vision to life, TCC-CIMET and KIT are hosting the RENABUMA Workshop a hands-on, collaborative platform where academia, industry, and communities come together to co-create practical solutions. The workshop is supported by:

  • KNUST College of Science (CoS)
  • International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR)

Together, the partners will explore circular construction pathways that are affordable, climate-resilient, and locally relevant.

But RENABUMA is more than a construction project. It is a movement one that rethinks how we use natural resources, reduces CO₂ emissions, and empowers communities with building solutions that honor tradition while embracing the future.

The journey has only begun, and we are excited to build it together.
